Castles & ruins 5: Revište , SK
Fort Reviste was guarding trade route by Hron river for rich miner towns – there were plenty of silver and copper mines in the area. Most probably fort was built around 13th century, but written sources are scarce and often mix Reviste in Slovakia with Reviste in Croatia – well, most of the chronicles were written by monks who most probably drunk wine not only at church ceremonies, but before and after as well.
Anyhow, fort had many owners, because miner towns were taken over by kings from time to time, who put their armies to guard the route and strengthened the castle.
Reviste was under Turkish siege several times and most probably was never conquered because there are no traces of fires or artillery damage on the surviving ruins. But later on mines were mined completely hollow, free towns lost their riches and with them their privileges and kings lost their interest in the region and the castle.
Still there is an interesting legend about one of the Turkish sieges: it happens so when castle was under long siege the wife of the Turkish pasha fell in love with the castle captain (why on earth would you take your wife to the war idk...). She was so attracted to him that one night just run away - to the castle. When pasha learned what happened he got mad and he challenged the captain to a duel. The captain agreed and on the morning fully armored knight stepped out of the castle. Pasha was quick with his sabre and cut his head right off. But as the head fall down, the helmet went off and pasha saw that the knight was actually his dear beloved wife.... In his anger he burned all around the castle and Turkish army killed everyone they could but the castle was still standing resisting any assault so Turks had to retreat.
